Wishful Thoughts

As within, so without.
I held a handful of life and light,
A head full of words and wisdom,
Legs restless with youthful energy,
And a heart overflowing
With mercy and grace.
Yet,
As the years gathered around me,
I found myself sinking deeper,
Even as I continued to rise
Through every season of my journey.
When I wandered
Into the jungle of agony and pain,
Every bird,
Even the crows,
Had something to say,
Yet none spoke.
Every tree held a joke,
Yet the forest remained silent.
We shared silence for breakfast
And solitude for supper.
Wishful reasons
Make perfect seasons,
Without a doubt.
I wish I knew,
Yet I am grateful
For all I did not know,
For ignorance, too,
Has been one of my greatest teachers.
Wishful thinking
Requires thoughtful meaning.
I never knew I was blessed
Until the day
I got dressed.
For every wish
Is born with us,
But every regret
Learns its name
With time.
If wishes were horses,
I would have ridden
Beyond every horizon,
Chasing hope
Instead of regret.
As within, so without.
